Part 1: In my own words, statistics is the collecting of a large group of data from many sources and classifying them into different ways, like bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs,or the stem-and-leaf diagram, and then interpreting the data presented by us in the classified ways. From what i have learnt from chapter 16, statistics are used to normally benefit the researcher or the community around him or her, and the information collected can be easily collected into bar graphs, pictograms, pie charts, line graphs, and stem-and-leaf diagram. A graph will always have a title and a key to tell the reader what the data drawn means. Statistics collection must be planned ahead of time to avoid unnecessary obstruction. In our real life, statistics are used for economical purposes for our Singapore government, information for the government to know about the population number of citizens of a country so as to plan for the upcoming future, like the number of houses they have to build for the citizens of the particular country, or for science experiments where line graphs, bar graphs and pie charts are commonly used for collecting the data or frequency of something happening, or the amount of things present at one point of time. From my personal experience as a student, my encounter with statistics has been countless. From the newspaper i read sometimes, i read the graphs which represent the amount votes for a particular subject which they asked from residents and citizens in Singapore. In our geography we sometimes use graphs to know the population of the citizens and how it affects the country’s land uses. For maths especially, the e-learning lesson was the greatest encounter with statistics as we had to collect the data of the frequency which the buses arrive on time, early, or late, and put the data into graphs and tables and put them on the class maths blog. Statistics are very useful for us in the future if we are going to pursue economics and the stock markets as a job. Newspaper articles like i said before use graphs, mostly bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs to show us the extent of a particular topic, example, the latest Singapore election. But sometimes statistics lie as usually for pie charts they put in an approximated percentage of the real number of votes or of something.

While one of us was drawing the main part to put our data and interpretation, the rest of us were working on the frequency graph and the way to present our data in other graphs, and grouping the right and accurate data up to not arouse confusions. My group’s strengths are being cooperative, responsible for our own work, and talking things out sensibly without arguing much. My roles were to get the group together for meetings, being a leader and leading them, and gathering data, with some planning of the base outcome of the poster. The difficulties i faced while doing this was while gathering 20 bus numbers, some of it were unusable as the collector might have made a typing error and we had to change the number of the buses and spread the buses out for each neighborhood, and we could not assume if the frequency and timing of the buses. If we could do this again in the future, i hope to do more detailed planning for the data collection and the way we are going to do the classifying of the data in more details.

Qns: If 1/6 is a recurring decimal, does it mean that all fractions with this same denominator will ALL also be recurring decimals?
Ans: No, as 3/6 simplified is 1/2, which is 0.5, which is not a recurring decimal.~Jia En~http://www.blogger.com/profile/01991803611113185941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-532094713132316528.post-76502213326605356942011-01-17T13:33:00.000+08:002011-01-17T13:33:36.874+08:00My final reflections for the orientation1.
The useful features of the wall wishers are:
1) Allows us to share ideas
2) Is a good way to communicate with classmates and teachers after school hours
3) Is a good platform for project discussions
The limitations of the wall wisher are the limited amount of characters allowed in a post and the limited size of the post.
The wall wisher can be used as a platform for communication and projects even after school hours between the teachers and pupils.
My favourite application is the windows live messenger, as it allows me to keep in touch with all my friends and communicate with them as if we are talking face to face. It also allows us to share images and files through the computer, and also, there is a webcam communication icon in a chat box to see a long lost friend or hear their voices.

A blog is a platform for sharing thoughts for a school project with my classmates, a place to share our daily life "adventures", and where we can be in contact with our teachers and friends at home, or a place to express our feelings.~Jia En~http://www.blogger.com/profile/01991803611113185941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-532094713132316528.post-40345695021131580592010-12-16T22:05:00.000+08:002010-12-16T22:05:46.329+08:00My picture for my reaction on being told i was selected by SST

After the DSA test and activity, I was very anxious about my results as i had been rejected by two schools for the dsa selection. I was really keen on going to SST, so when i got the email and letter i was superbly happy and surprised. This is my reason for choosing this picture.
